Little Armies

Topical and easy to produce, toy soldiers and civilian figures formed a vital piece of the international toy market for over a century. Mike Thornton of the New York Historical Society draws from the society’s collection, to explore the art and history of toy soldiers through examples from key makers like Heyde and Britains on through Barclay and plastic playsets made by Marx in the 1950s. Popular even today, what do these toys reveal about past wars and the generations that created and played with them?
