Red Flags of Fraud and Online Shopping Safety

In the first half of this Better Business Bureau (BBB) presentation, Monica will cover some of the current local fraud schemes. Every year, more than eight out of ten people are targeted for some type of fraudulent activity. In Red Flags of Fraud, Monica will educate attendees regarding the latest scams and ways to avoid becoming a victim. The second half of this presentation will cover online shopping safety. Online purchase scams accounted for 42% of all scams reported to BBB Scam Tracker in 2023. In this type of scam, fraudsters offer attractive online deals, but once the payment is made, no product or service is delivered, or the scammers send low-quality or counterfeit products. About the Presenter: Monica Beach is the educational foundation manager with Better Business Bureau serving Eastern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. With nearly twenty years of experience in community education, she has been privileged to teach a variety of topics to both youth and adults. In her current role with BBB, Monica partners with local community organizations and conducts speaking engagements which aim to educate consumers and businesses about ways to safely operate in the marketplace.
