The history of Michigan’s Kirtland’s Warbler includes successful efforts to prevent extinction. Even though the warbler was removed from the Endangered Species List in 2019, all the work that was done to prevent its extinction must continue for as far as we can see into the future. That’s because the warbler is the first “conservation reliant” species to come off the Endangered Species List. Its ongoing conservation requires building a new model for recovered species, which if successful, should help many other species to come off the List.
