Minoru Yamasaki, Detroit’s best-known midcentury architect, left his mark both in metro Detroit and around the country. This course explores his childhood and education, early days of his career and how he came to Detroit to establish his own firm. Yamasaki’s world travel influences on architectural philosophy helped his career take off in the 1960s – leading to a commission for the World Trade Center in New York City. This class is precursor to the May 11th walking tour event highlighting some of Yamasaki's most iconic works in Detroit.
