The City of Detroit has the honor of being the only UNESCO-designated “City of Design” in the United States because of its historic and continuing contributions to the development of American architecture, industrial prowess, and city planning. From the late 19th century to the onset of the Great Depression architects vied to create ever taller and more beautiful monuments to the power and wealth of the city. This lecture will explore and celebrate the greatest achievements of Detroit’s first building boom and how these innovations are still shaping the world today.
