    This class is about the French Era of Detroit, essentially the period from 1701 to 1842, exploring the roots of Detroit’s founding, its context and purpose, and explaining how strong French cultural influence continues to resonate in Detroit’s changing political landscape. The impact of French heritage will be examined relative to the many other cultural influences that have evolved in Detroit over the past two centuries.

    “About the Presenter: A lifelong Detroiter, author Charles G. Bird is dedicated to exploring and raising the awareness of Detroit’s French cultural heritage. He is currently working on an historical fiction series of novels set in Detroit from 1701 to 1840 called St. Aubin’s Detroit; the first two installments are The Straits of Detroit and Cadillac’s Detroit. He is a member of the French-Canadian Heritage Society, the Detroit Historical Society, Historical Society of Michigan and the Father Gabriel Richard Guild.”
